The ICC Buying Group Creating Smiles with Smile Foundation

Johannesburg - The ICC Buying Group and key suppliers in the FMCG industry have for the 6th year in a row witnessed how their sponsorship to Smile Foundation has delivered smiles to those less fortunate. The visit took place during the ICC Smile week held on the 24th November at the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital (DGMAH) in Ga-Rankuwa.

20 previoulsy disadvantaged children who suffer from various facial conditions such as cleft lip and cleft palate were given surgery this year thanks to these funds raised by ICC and facilitated by Smile Foundation.

The journey includes identification of these children in the rural communities, transport and care for the children and mothers while at the hospital as well as a host of counselling and educational services to help integrate the child back into society.

A highlight of the visit was the recent completion of the Burns Unit which has been a three year project between the public sector, the private sector and Smile Foundation. Through the vision of Dr Annandale, Zacharia Francois (Grysie), the burns unit is now the second largest burns unit in the country and helps to address the biggest killer of children in South Africa under the age of 4.

These funds are raised at ICC Buying Group’s annual golf day which took place earlier this year on the 7th April at Woodhill Golf Estate. Key suppliers in the FMCG industry entered the golf day themed around The Masters and all proceeds raised were donated to two charities.

Smile Foundation received R350 000 and PinkDrive received R100 000 to go towards placing another Mobile Women´s Health Unit truck on the road.

Gert Scheepers, CEO of The ICC Buying Group hosted the visit and commented “Our member stores are generally located in various communities, so we continually witness the needs and strive to make a small differecne where we can. With Smile Foundation we help to put smiles back not only to the children but also the parents from previously disadvantaged circumstances and with PinkDrive, the mobile trucks are able to reach ladies who may not have the means for annual check ups. Early detection saves lives!
